Higdon Awarded Pulitzer

April 12, 2010 § Leave a comment

Jennifer Higdon has been awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for her Violin Concerto. I first encountered Ms. Higdon while she was a grad student at Bowling Green State University. At the time, I was in middle school, just learning to play the double bass. Our school orchestra director had commissioned Ms. Hidgon to compose a small work for the high school orchestra. She attended its premiere, in the high school cafeteria, to an appreciative if somewhat bewildered audience.

To this day, I have wondered what became of the score and the parts for that early work, entitled Run, and what Ms. Higdon would think of it were she to run across it again. It may well be languishing in the high school music library.
